“Hevva! Hevva!” Year 3 enjoyed a fascinating, information-packed visit to Porthmeor Art Studios and Fishing Cellars on Wednesday 27th November. With every child dressing up in aprons, waistcoats or caps, we were instantly transported back 150 years to a time when the fishermen of St Ives fished for pilchards over the summer months, before the fisherwives formed a ‘bulk’ to cure the fish once they had been landed on shore. We were lucky enough to see one of the old fishing cellars, with its original wall built by Smeaton to give St Ives some protection from the sand blowing into town off Porthmeor. Also, we saw a demonstration of net-setting with some of the children trying this craft for themselves.
