Jim Roberson: inspiration, life-changer and discipline coach!

“It’s not what you do TO yourself. It’s what you do FOR yourself!” So believes Jim Roberson, a Discipline Coach from the Bronx in New York, who visited school on Friday, spreading his word in assembly before working with year 5 and 6 classes. Singing his way around the school, Jim visited each class to inspire us all to join the ‘Better People Club’. He has three idols: 50 Cent who he quotes as saying ‘Life is not for finding yourself,  but for creating yourself.’ , Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan who once famously stated,  ‘Leave as little to chance as possible.  Preparation is the key to success.’

Jim is an engaging teacher who believes in RESPECT, ACCOUNTABILITY AND PREPARATION:   R.A P for short. He told us that with a growth mindset we can all accomplish great goals.  Fail to prepare, prepare to fail: you can never be an expert instantly but through practice and preparation we will all get there.  Prepare to be the greatest.  Turn your dreams into reality!

I loved it when Jim came in, his lesson was really powerful. He really taught me that it’s better to have a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset. A truely remarkable man !

I think Jim was completely worth the money! He was so funny and he also talked about practising, which is key to learning. He also said that you need a Growth mindset, knowing you can’t be right at everything first go. I also loved his ‘No answer is wrong’ approach that made Class 10 all think they could go for it!

The thing that inspired me the most was the fact, he travelled all the way to come and spend an hour in each upper school class, it just shows that he really wants his message to go out to everyone, ‘prepare to be the greatest’!!!

Jim is a great inspiration to people like us who don’t yet know what to do. If you quit you won’t achieve. But if you keep trying you can make it happen. “Prepare to be the greatest!

Jim was funny as well as getting the message across, that it’s OK to make mistakes, so just give it a go. He explained things really clearly and really made a difference to the way i think about myself & to believe more in myself.

I think we learnt a lot when Jim Roberson came to SIJS. He mostly talked about preparation and respect. He also mentioned about our lives in the future. Discipline is not about what you do to yourself but what you do for yourself.

Jim was truly inspirational and very thought provoking. He really made me believe that we can all be whatever we want to be as long as we have discipline and the correct preparation.
Maybe I could still play Rugby for Cornwall!

I really enjoyed Jim coming in because he taught us we can achieve our dream and that it was OK to get things wrong as long as we gave it ago.

I really liked how he made people think about their future and that if you don’t try more than once you might not find your hobbies and what you can work on. He is a great role model for the school as well as being a fun and creative discipline coach.
